The University of Michigan’s identity system is designed to create and maintain unity — to ensure that no matter which campus, college or unit is issuing the communication, it is properly and strongly branded.
Unit logos are created in the generator, which is programmed to produce logo sets that conform to all brand standards. U-M units and external vendors are not authorized to create or modify university logos.
You must have access to the generator before you can make unit logos. Please email us at idstandards@umich.edu if you need help logging in.
PLEASE NOTE:
THE LOGO GENERATOR IS FOR CAMPUS ONLY! Units associated with Michigan Medicine, including the Medical School, are not eligible to use it. Learn more about health system logos and download available logos here.
Students are also not eligible to use the logo generator. Students should contact the marketing department of their school/college for details on what options are available.
Some logos cannot be generated online and must be created upon request. Email ID Standards for more information.

Formal Unit Logo
In this most formal signature, the ‘hero’ is featured in the marquee location, making it the most visually prominent element of the mark.
Usage:
Schools/Colleges: Official name of School/College, Degree-Granting Programs, Centers and Internal Administrative Departments/Units.
Administrative Offices: Institutes, Offices, Divisions, Units.
Marketing Unit Logo
In situations where internal university hierarchy is not important to the audience, this unit logo helps schools, colleges and other U-M units stand out.
Usage:
Schools/Colleges: Official name of School/College, Degree-Granting Programs and Centers.
(CANNOT BE USED FOR SCHOOL/COLLEGE ADMINISTRATIVE DEPARTMENTS — e.g. Career Services, Office of Student Life, etc.)
Administrative Offices: Institutes, Offices, Divisions, Units.
Informal Unit Logo
As the title suggests, this mark is intended for informal representation of a unit. Linking the unit directly to the Block M without the addition of “University of Michigan” should be reserved for internal communications or for outreach to stakeholders who are already familiar with the unit.
Usage:
Administrative Offices: Institutes, Offices, Divisions, Units.
Formal Stacked Unit Logo
This logo is typically reserved for settings in which there is limited space and the preferred horizontal mark would not be legible. This logo is considered equivalent to the Marketing logo.
Usage:
Schools/Colleges: Official name of School/College, Degree-Granting Programs, Centers and Internal Administrative Departments.
Administrative Offices: Institutes, Offices, Divisions, Units.
Reproducing Logos With Limited Color
Ideally, logos would always be reproduced in full color. But when that’s not possible, maintaining adequate contrast between logo and background is paramount.
When working against a light background, one-color logos may be reproduced in Michigan Blue or black.
Dark backgrounds can support Michigan Maize or white logos to maintain acceptable contrast.
This handy PDF shows examples of each.
